The Arches and Long Gallery, Digbeth, Birmingham.

Weedon Partnership llp have obtained Planning permission for a development of the locally A Listed Railway Arches within Digbeth’s Conservation Area.

Surrounded by Grade II and II* Listed buildings the project will enhance the area under and around the Railway viaduct by semi enclosing the arches and creating a 3D courtyard in this under utilised area. The enclosed arches will provide flexible use spaces for performance, entertaining, social and retail experiences.

The courtyard created externally provides a destination accessed through the newly proposed "Long Gallery" exhibition space from the heart of the Custard Factory development. Security and management of the site will be improved and public art will be introduced to provide the cultural ambiance associated with this area.

The translucent polymer tensile web enclosing the arches is supported on a free standing scaffold like structure with minimal impact on the arches. The scale is bold and strong to match the powerful scale of the arches and will create an identifiable landmark within the area.

The project is currently awaiting ERDF funding.
